| Borrowed from medieval Japanese, the American Raku tradition involves moving red-hot pots from the kiln into a container of combustible material which can then be sealed off. The smoke paints in black, but wild colors form when the dying fire pulls oxygen out of the glazes. Plankton is drawn toward the opalescent, mother-of-pearl lustre of gold raku, while his white crackle series uniquely makes use of biological or anatomical elements division and bloom. |
